Males and dies are cutting tools used in both jewelry and watchmaking. They are used to machine the threads of both nuts and bolts. With the males we make the threads in the nuts and with the taps we make them in the screws. We can start from scratch or we can use them to repair threads that have been damaged well by the passage of time or by a bad manipulation.
Its use is very simple, that is why although it is a process that can be performed using large-scale machines, in the world of jewelry and watchmaking it is always more convenient to do it by hand.
In the case of the realization of screws or threaded males the process is very simple. We start from a cylindrical piece, with the help of a gauge we measure its exact diameter, this step is important since we must choose the hole of the tap of the same diameter as the cylindrical piece, on the one hand, to make a good thread and on the other side not to damage the tap since it will scratch the metal as we turn it.
With the males the process is practically the same except that we will start from a hollow piece in which we will make the thread inside.
